Introduction
ITB, a division of Novus Holdings, is seeking to appoint a Quality Control Technician: Incoming Materials and Work in Progress, to ensure that all raw materials, packaging materials, consumables and other externally supplied materials received into the manufacturing facility are inspected, sampled, tested, identified and dispositioned in accordance with approved specifications, purchase requirements, supplier documentation, applicable food-safety requirements and the company Quality Management System (QMS).
The position provides the first line of quality control over incoming materials and prevents non-conforming materials from entering production.
Job description
- Perform incoming inspection and quality verification of raw materials and packaging-related materials against approved specifications, purchase orders, supplier COAs/COCs and defined sampling plans.
- Verify material identity, description, product code, batch/lot number, quantity, manufacturing date, expiry/retest date where applicable, and supplier information.
- Inspect packaging and delivery condition for damage, contamination, moisture, foreign matter, infestation, incorrect labelling, seal integrity and other visible defects.
- Collect representative samples using approved sampling procedures and ensure samples are correctly identified and traceable to the supplier batch/lot.
- Conduct or coordinate routine QC tests applicable to the material, including dimensional, physical, visual and functional checks.
- For flexible packaging materials, where applicable, inspect/test properties such as thickness/gauge, width, COF, dyne level/surface treatment, haze, gloss, appearance, colour, shrinkage and other approved characteristics.
- Review supplier Certificates of Analysis (COAs), Certificates of Conformance (COCs), declarations and other quality documentation against the applicable specification.
- Record inspection and test results accurately, legibly and in real time on approved inspection records or electronic systems.
- Place materials on HOLD where inspection, testing or documentation is incomplete or where results do not meet requirements.
- Ensure non-conforming incoming materials are clearly identified, segregated and prevented from unintended use.
- Escalate non-conformances to the Quality Manager and relevant Purchasing/Warehouse/Production personnel.
- Assist with supplier complaints, investigations, corrective actions and follow-up verification where incoming material defects are identified.
- Maintain traceability of accepted, rejected and conditionally released materials.
- Verify that approved supplier and material status requirements are followed before material release.
- Participate in stock and material inspections, quarantine reviews and periodic re-inspections where required.
- Maintain cleanliness and good housekeeping of the QC inspection and sampling area and ensure test equipment is protected from contamination or damage.
- Use measuring and testing equipment correctly and report damaged, overdue or suspect equipment immediately.
- Comply with all applicable GMP, HACCP, food safety, occupational health and safety, environmental and company requirements.
Minimum requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- A certificate or diploma in Quality, Food Technology, Polymer Technology, Packaging Technology, Science or a related field is advantageous.
- Previous experience in quality inspection, incoming goods inspection, laboratory work, manufacturing or flexible packaging is advantageous.
- Basic understanding of ISO 9001, GMP, HACCP and food-packaging quality requirements.
- Experience with measuring instruments and basic QC testing is a requirement.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word.
- Knowledge of SYSPRO will be advantageous.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment in a similar role is preferred.
